Maybe misery really does love company. By all accounts online dating is having a record breaking period in growth membership and of course profit.

Amazingly enough all of this comes in the midst of some harsh economic times. While we are not experiencing anything like the Great Depression of the nineteen thirties, many economists and people who lived through that era agree we are approaching that territory.

Still online dating is feeling no pain with places like Match, Plenty of Fish, eHarmony and Yahoo personnel leading the way, the future is looking good for the online dating industry.

Yet even as the online dating industry has experienced incredible growth the vast majority of singles still want no parts of it. As Match CEO Thomas Enraght-Moony tells Andrew Davidson of the Times Online, "Almost everyone who could use these services, doesn't. Our task is to get them off the fence."

Since Moony is in the business it is expected that he would want to move as many singles off the fence and into the cyberdating world. But there are a lot of singles that remain unconvinced.

It could be the stigma online dating acquired years ago still exists in for many people. Only weirdos and the desperate would think about looking for an unseen, unknown companion in cyberspace. While internet dating has definitely moved into the mainstream, old perceptions like habits are hard to shake.

Then there is just the plain old fact that many singles just don't see the value in it. They have been doing alright for themselves in the offline world so why change now? Others may not be so successful but they still do not grasp the advantages of online dating. Here's a few:

There is no need to wonder if someone likes the same things you like or what their interest are. That is already spelled out on the person's profile.

3. Screening

An online chat with a possible dating partner can tell you whether the person is worth your time. and you do not have to spend hours or carfare trying to figure it out.

4. Safety

In the offline world the person you date for the first time may turn out to be alright but you do not know. Online dating thru the screening process can definitely give you a better idea of who you are dealing with and all from the security of your own home.

For some singles online dating will never lose its stigma. Others will take a pass because they like exploring other avenues.

But no avenue has ever offered people the ability to connect so many other people almost instantly and conveniently. That and the new innovations in this digital age guarantee that online dating will become an even bigger deal than it is right now. Article written by Daryl Campbell at The Relationship Tip.
